I just found out from my Facebook feed that a number of old car dealerships I used to know and / or work for have closed their doors. It was a shock to learn that these once healthy Scarborough, Ontario, Canada businesses are now gone. I was there in the hay days of the 80's and 90's, starting out at Hogan Chev-Olds and then moving on to Alex Irvine Chev-Olds for 11 years. We moved a lot of cars and trucks!!
This 1967 Chevelle was purchased from Alex Irvine.
This is the mosque that is now on the site of the used car building where I worked. To say the least, it was a different neighborhood back then. We were a well respected store and always one of the top volume producers in the city. I still remember helping a lady who had locked her keys in her car in the plaza on the left. Her child was locked inside but everything turned out fine after I used a slim jim on the door. Cars were a lot easier to open back then :-) My General Manager got a nice letter from her.
Demolished Dec. 10, 2010, Marvin Starr was one of the top stores in Ontario.
Other Scarborough dealerships that have closed are Jim Davidson Chrysler (undergoing demolition), Bob Johnson Chev Olds, Bob Bannerman's American Motors, Don Howsen Chev Olds, Paddy Shananhan Ford (I worked there for a year), Foster Pontiac Buick and Craig Hind Chrysler. Also gone are Harvey's Burgers, Pizza Nova (across from my old High School), the old Dairy Queen and Mac's Milk (it was like a 7-11).
These are my sales photos for Alex Irvine Chev Olds and Shanahan Ford back in the days. We had a lot of fun!
I hope everyone has a Wonderful Holiday Season and that 2011 will bring comfort and joy!
