John Mayer's Real Estate Blog: Speechless Sundays - Cocoa Beach Air Show

Speechless Sundays - Cocoa Beach Air Show

An F16 Fighting Falcon streaks by a C117. It was flying at 650 mph most of the time, less than half it's top speed.

Cocoa Beach Air Show

About 30,000 spectators lined the beach to watch the show which took place Oct. 4th and 5th. There was a small armada of boats moored just offshore.

Looks like they put on quite a show.  We enjoy the Blue Angels when they come here for the hydroplane races.

I grew up in the AF, my dad was an F86-D and an F105 pilot.  Lived in El Centro NAS, Ca. where the Blue Angels would practice.  Woke up many mornings with them doing super-sonic bomb-burst formations.

Rattled the windows.

In the 60's, we lived on Kadena AFB in Okinawa.  That was during the run-up in Vietnam in '65.  We lived off base at the warm-up end of the runway.  For weeks we couldn't get to sleep because of the 24x7 B52 flights warming up.

Then we got used to it, no problem.  Then about a year later we moved on base and were off to the side of the field.  No more thundering engines on warm-up.

For weeks we couldn't get to sleep because it was too quiet.  Then we got used to it.

I grew up with military aircraft and love to watch them.

Looks like great weather and great fun John! Thanks for sharing! We get a lot of jets from Nellis that fly over our house several times a week.

Theodora - The Blue Angels are fun to watch.

Mike - Those planes do make a lot of noise!

Wanda - We have Patrick AFB in Cocoa Beach so we get toe see a lot of flybys as well.

There was also a lot to see in the non-powerful planes. Cocoa Beach resident John Black – a former Air Force pilot – wowed the crowd with a series of flips and dives in a small Super Decathalon with only 180 horsepower. He pulled a lot of “negative G’s” flying upside down.

“With those negative G’s it’s like he’s trying to throw his eyeballs right outside his head,” said announcer Larry Strain. “This is done ever so gracefully. He lets it flow ever so gently. This may look easy but he needs to be working the controls and rudders constantly.”

Now there's a great photo of the beach ... in OCTOBER, no less.  Here, we would be wearing a Winter coat over the bikini. :)

John-I love airshows.  We anchored once in the Indian River to watch an airshow and it was spectacular.  Thank you for sharing the photos.

John - What amazing shots.  I've seen the Blue Angels perform.  And have wondered how in the heck they can fly within in mere inches of each other and not crash.  My Navy retired son says, "Practice, practice, practice."  But it seems during the learning experience something could go amiss on the way to perfection:-)

Sylvie - I know. I was born in Toronto.

Kathy - Your welcome.

Paul - The beach is a great place to watch an air show.

Debi - Do you know how many G's you pull in one of those? :-)

Myrl - Even with all that practice mishaps still happen but the pilots are willing to risk it.

Hi John, I wanted to get up to see the air show, but never was able to get up there.  Thanks for bringing it to us. And thanks for allowing me to show your listing on Pace this weekend.

John CAN YOU HEAR ME??? Love the clear blue sky.  What a roar that must have caused.  I love air shows.

Sandy - Too bad you missed it! Any word on Pace?

Carra - Only a cold Corona :-)

Jenny - You wouldn't believe the roar from the F16. It went right through you. Imagine what the Taliban feels when one of those is bearing down fully armed.

Hi John: That was really quite remarkable that you were able to get both planes in that shot!
