The Time's they are a Changin' and The Old Neighborhood just isn't the Same!

I just found out from my Facebook feed that a number of old car dealerships I used to know and / or work for have closed their doors. It was a shock to learn that these once healthy Scarborough, Ontario, Canada businesses are now gone. I was there in the hay days of the 80's and 90's, starting out at Hogan Chev-Olds and then moving on to Alex Irvine Chev-Olds for 11 years. We moved a lot of cars and trucks!!

This 1967 Chevelle was purchased from Alex Irvine.

1967 Chevelle

This is the mosque that is now on the site of the used car building where I worked. To say the least, it was a different neighborhood back then. We were a well respected store and always one of the top volume producers in the city. I still remember helping a lady who had locked her keys in her car in the plaza on the left. Her child was locked inside but everything turned out fine after I used a slim jim on the door. Cars were a lot easier to open back then :-) My General Manager got a nice letter from her.

Lawrence and Midland, Scarborough.

Demolished Dec. 10, 2010, Marvin Starr was one of the top stores in Ontario.

Scarborough GM Dealership

Other Scarborough dealerships that have closed are Jim Davidson Chrysler (undergoing demolition), Bob Johnson Chev Olds, Bob Bannerman's American Motors, Don Howsen Chev Olds, Paddy Shananhan Ford (I worked there for a year), Foster Pontiac Buick and Craig Hind Chrysler. Also gone are Harvey's Burgers, Pizza Nova (across from my old High School), the old Dairy Queen and Mac's Milk (it was like a 7-11).

These are my sales photos for Alex Irvine Chev Olds and Shanahan Ford back in the days. We had a lot of fun!

John,

Yes, times are certainly, changing.  Whoever thought, back then, that we were living the good old days?  having been in Florida on vacation, I do notice many older cars that are still in prime condition.  At least, you can still see the cars.

Rob - The car business was good to a lot of us and a great teacher.

Frances - The older car fans are alive and well in Florida and there are Rallys and shows all the time.

Wonderful memories, John!  I still live in the same town that I grew up in.  Every once in awhile I venture over to the old neighborhood.  The changes there have been heartbreaking to witness.  Yet, there is some hope things will turn around one day!  I'm a big fan of the 1950s and 1960s vintage cars.  Especially the Fords and Chevys.

Hi John - As a result of the GM bankruptcy process in 2009, GM forced the closure of a number of GM dealerships in Canada as well as the USA.  I'm not sure if all of the dealerships you named were affected by the bankruptcy but there was one in Unionville / Markham that is no longer a dealership but just sells used cars and services cars.  They don't seem to be too busy.  Another one in Pickering closed down and I have seen a few dealer lots for sale but no activity.

The mosque is in a very convenient location for its members.  I see people coming and going from it quite regularly.  I'm not sure how long it has been at that location but it has been there for at least several years.

Hi John... it's sad to see the things that change where we have spent our pasts.  Several places I have worked disappeared, thankfully the good memories of those places and experiences live on!

Posted by Steve Shatsky over 8 years ago

Hi Myrl - It's been quite a while since I've been back and I know I wouldn't recognize the place anymore. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to settle for the beach :-)

Marc - It's a shame about the GM closings and lost jobs but I could see the writing on the wall years ago. The head office was bloated with a bunch of fat cat executives who let their greed take over. Sound familiar?

Ron and Alexandra - Happy Holidays to you both!

Steve - In another hundred years, no one may even care about these memories but at least I can share them now. Maybe I should write a song :-)

I love the era of the 'muscle cars' because of their looks and big engines, things are changing fast and not necessarily for the best. I am looking forward to what the coming year will bring though! The best to you John!

Wanda - I always try to look forward and envision a better future but if you watched 60 minutes tonight you may lose your optimism. Apparently the States are going to require the next big bailout. I'm going to the beach if the weather ever warms up :-)

John,

Bought a 1964 Pontiac 2+2 convertible when I got my first job. 421 cubic inches of pure power. Thanks for the memories.

I had a metalic blue Chevy just like that! Those are GREAT cars! Thanks for the memories and a great post!

Patricia - Metallic blue was my favorite color too. Those cars could really fly! It helped that gas was only a dollar a gallon :-)

Merry Christmas Karen! Yeah, an old photo got me thinking of my old days in the car business. The neghborhood has completely changed but I still have the memories.

Happy Holidays!

Those were some great cars. Hate to see the old get demolished all the time. Looks like the old mustache has managed to stave off demolition!

Love that Chevelle-thats my car!!  Sorry to hear of these closings.  I have noticed recently that alot of the dealers by me have closed as well that have been open for years and years.  It is such a shame that businesses that have survived for so long are unable to make it now.

John, things do change, but not the love for those old muscle cars.  I have a lot of great memories in a 1967 Chevelle SS.

Thanks Russel - Lots of food for sure! It's black eye peas for luck on New Year's Day. I wish you lots of luck in 2011!

Gary - The 'stash wil vever be demolished. At least that's something I have control over :-)

Debra - You could feel the power under the hood in that car and pull G's in a drag race. Change is inevitible and sometimes surprises us.

Nick - Those were great cars. I had a Z 28.

Posted by John Mayer, Your Beach Area Expert (Oikos Realty, Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach Florida) about 8 years ago

John, a Z 28 huh???  Not too shabby my friend.  You know, if I ever hit the lotto...I think I'm going to take a trip to Barrett-Jackson...I know there's an old Shelby or GTO with my name on it out there!

Hi all,

I just picked up a 1969 wildcat convertible up in Ottawa....the car is in amazing condition. Brought it back to Toronto and when looking through the car I found the build sheet under the driver's side of the bench seat....it said delivered to MARVIN STARR! Wow....this car has been down out East...out West and down in the Southern States but has made it back to Scarborough!

Cheers - DC
