John Mayer's Real Estate Blog: The Sun has Finally Set on a Great Man - My Father

The Sun has Finally Set on a Great Man - My Father

I have been posting sunset photos all week on my blog and now the reality of my Dad's sunset has come to pass. Dad was 87 years old and his mind was still as sharp as a tack. I talked with him several hours before he passed away not knowing the end was so near. His heart finally gave out and his body failed him. I love you Dad! The prose below was read at my Mother's funeral. They are finally together again.

I have only slipped away into the next room. I am I and you are you...Whatever we were to each other that we are still. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way which you all used. Put no difference into your tone; Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without effort, without the ghost of a shadow on it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was: there is absolutely unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner. All is well.

My Dad in Tillsonburg

Mom and Dad getting married at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Toronto in 1947. I arrived one year later :-) What a beautiful couple who had 60 wonderful years together! I can't tell you how many weddings I attended there over the years with friends and family. We will be celebrating my Father's life in Toronto all next week. We miss you Dad!

I'm sorry to hear of your loss, John. I love the pictures of your parents' wedding - they look so happy.

I'm so sorry on your loss.  The happiness of your mom and dads wedding day obviously carried them through 60 years and as you say now they can be together again.  Having just lost my hubby of 31 years I know it is the ones left behind feeling such pain.

Rose - Those were special times. I was only a twinkle in their eye back then :-)

Sue - I'm sorry for your loss also. The 60 years my parents were together were not harmonious every single day but that's what love and marriage are all about. You have to work at it :-) They loved each other and their family very much and it showed.

I'm very sorry for your loss also.  My husband lost his father today, too.  Prayers and warm thoughts headed your way...

John, you have Great Parents, who provide a Great Testimony to the Institution of Marriage (60 years!).

RIP to your Parents, and look forward to that Day when you all meet again.

John,

I'm so sorry to hear that your Dad passed away. I'm in my 60's and there are still plenty of times I wish mine were around to talk to and ask questions.

My prayers are with you.

Oh John this was not a sunset we were looking for. May all your happy memories carry you through this.  So glad your parents will be together again.  What a wonderful pose spoken at your Mom's funeral. Something to remember! All the best John.

John  Just remember they will now be together again, never to be separated.  They had a special bond that transcends their earthly life - you are a fortunate man for being a part of their life

Thank you Rich - I too am in my 60's and dread the thought of reaching the end of the line. I'd better go walk around the park again :-)

Toni - My parents loved each other and cared for their kids even when we were a pain in the butt. We even lived in a "Beaver Cleaver" subdivision :-)

Hi John : Heart felt condolences here on your dad's passing. He was a lucky man. I didn't get to know your dad but judging from you and your brother, he was a great man.

John, I am so sorry to hear about your dad's passing.  My deepest sympathy goes out to you and the rest of the family.  The wedding pictures are beautiful, hard to believe that was more than 60 years ago. Your mom was always 'My Pal', now she is joined by your dad and they can spend eternity together having the same fun they had when they were with us.  My thoughts are with you and your family through this time of grief.

Thank you Teresa. My Mom liked you very much. We just got back from Canada where we had a nice celebration of my Dad's life. He was a special man!

John, Sorry to read out about your father's passing.  Hard to lose your parents, yet you have very fond memories of him and your mother, from what I have read.  May you find all the support and comfort you need in the months ahead.
