John Mayer's Real Estate Blog: Thankful Thursdays - A Cloudy Sunset for the Sick and Homeless

Thankful Thursdays - A Cloudy Sunset for the Sick and Homeless

It's sunset week on my blog but there wasn't much of a sunset last night so here's what I saw after all the rain. I'm just thankful that I have my health and a happy home. There will always be another spectacular sunset tomorrow.

On a sadder note...

Jump's Tiny Tavern in Cocoa Beach, Florida will be hosting a charity benefit for Darlene Olson on Sat, July 2, 2011. The all day event will feature trophies for horseshoe players, prizes, raffles, food & music! All proceeds and donations will go to help her fight the fight of her life against cancer. Jump’s is located at 201 Taft Ave. in Cocoa Beach. Call 321-784-7893 for information or to make early donations.
Darlene worked at the Straw Hat Lounge in Cape Canaveral for 18 years and yet my favorite little tavern is the one holding the benefit. One of our regular horseshoe players JT, knows Darlene and he and his wife got the ball rolling. They bought 200 lbs. of chicken and good horseshoe buddy Tom will be BBQ’ing it at his home across the road. Jump’s owners Angel and Steve are doing everything they can to make this day special for Darlene. Let’s all wish her well!

Finally the Sun Poked Through the Palms just as I'm hoping it will shine upon Darlene.

From SCAR (The Space Coast Association of Realtors)

Within the last couple of weeks the television news show 60 Minutes featured a segment on Homeless Children and Brevard County was mentioned in the segment. Louise McLean of Hartung Real Estate brought this to the attention of our Board of Directors and with the leadership of Louise we are forming a Task Force to discuss the situation and develop a plan to see if we can help these homeless children with some of their basic needs.

A sad but true fact: The Brevard County School Board has identified 1,000+ homeless children living in Brevard County.

John,

Some gremlins crept into your post,  I am sure that was not your intention.  The photos as usual are beautiful. A

I was just sitting here thinking. . .If one had to b sick and homeless, Florida would be one of those places that would seem best for it to be.  Stick a few tree branches in the sand, toss several palm fronds on top for a roof, and call it home.  HVAC would be the ocean breezes, and occasionally a hurricane or two:-)

Hey John, nice shout out to Darlene...all my best to her and those helping.

All the best wishes we can send to Darlene, John. What a great thing for the Owner of your favourite little tavern to do.  Good also to hear your new task force looking after the homeless John because that is a staggering number.

Thanks Erika - More rain today and we really need it but I won't see the sunset tonight :-(

Myrl - That's what I like about you...always looking on the bright side. The Melbourne cops just dispersed a homeless camp about 30 miles from me and the Orlando police have arrested members of "Food not Guns" for regularly feeding the homeless in public parks without a permit. All we need is a hurricane!

Thanks Nick - I'll pass it along.

Al and Peggy - That's a lot of homeless kids for sure but the numbers include those living in motels where they are picked up by the school bus.

John - I was just watching the nightly national news.  In various cities and towns across the nation there is a significant problem of homelessness among veterans.  Los Angeles has an enormous population of homeless vets.  They pointed out that the VA has converted some VA land for private use (corporations are building on old base properties to create profit for the VA), rather than to use it to help remedy the problem.  Heck, they had even created a Dog Park to provide recreation for dogs rather than take care of homeless vets living on the streets.

John- we've been having rain as well.  When we hear of the homeless, we forget that there are children involved.  We've got to do anything we can to make sure they have some semblance of a home life.

Myrl - We have a lot of homeless vets here too that need support and basic necessities. It isn't right that we let them fall through the cracks. Pets, it seems are more important than people, as you say.

Kathy - What children go through now affects them for the rest of their life. Living day to day in a motel or a shelter causes a lot of stress and they endure ridicule from their peers.

John, Great photos, that is a great cause!  I do hope that Darlene wins her fight!

Tony and Darcy - Darlene may not have that much time left but at least she has people who care.
