John Mayer's Real Estate Blog: My African Cichlid Tropical Fish in an Octopuses' Garden Video

My African Cichlid Tropical Fish in an Octopuses' Garden Video

My African Cichlids were getting amorous and zipping around the aquarium, so I quickly set up my camera and started filming. My wife calls these guys my "little piranhas" and they can get pretty fiesty. They are a lot of fun to watch and you don't have to "poop and scoop". Our Spotted Shark catfish does that :-) African Cichlids are intelligent, aggressive and very hardy which makes them easy to maintain. Every time you walk by they're swarming the glass begging for more food and live shrimp don't stand a chance. There are over 1200 unique and unusual species and they have a life span of 4 to 10 years.

Nice looking Cichlids, I also have some. They are peacock cichlids I house in a 60 gallon tank and some discus I keep in a 110 gallon.  Fish are very relaxing when you come home from a tough day at work.  They are always there to greet you as you walk by them.

Thanks Kathy - These fish come in a variety of colors. It's just like having a saltwater tank but a lot less trouble.

Christopher - We just have a 20 gallon tank and it's good enough for now. You're right, fish are relaxing and entertaining.

My dad used to have a tank with African Cichlids. I loved to watch when the eggs hatched and how they were carried around in the mouth by the mom until they were old enough to be on their own. A few would come out of her gills and swim around and back in her mouth. FUN memories John!

Hi Wanda - I watched a documentary showing how they cared for their young. Mine haven't got to that point yet but I'm hoping :-)

John,

You made my day! I love the video. Those fish are really active! That was a clever idea to video tape them and show others what they are doing, when nobody is looking. I was mesmerized!

Congrat's on the FEATURE! It's a very, very nice post!

Thanks Patricia - I took that video at about 1 am when they thought I wasn't around. I'm hoping to find little ones in the tank someday ;-)

I tried having an aquarium right after I graduated from college but we didn’t really get along well for some reason. I did like the cichlids; they seem to be the most colorful freshwater fish.

Eric - Having a cichlid aquarium is the next best thing to a saltwater tank without the extra maintenance. The fish are just as colorful and very territorial.
