John Mayer's Real Estate Blog: Speechless Sundays - Hairy-Footed Flower Bee, Gecko and Portulacas in a Cape Canaveral Garden

Speechless Sundays - Hairy-Footed Flower Bee, Gecko and Portulacas in a Cape Canaveral Garden

My wife planted these portulacas in a hanging basket that are really doing well. The beautiful orange flowers attracted this hairy-footed female flower bee (I think) that got the attention of our fake yellow gecko :-).

Cape Canaveral Garden

There are about 40 to 100 species of portulacas found in the tropics and warm, temperate regions. They are also more commonly known as Moss Roses. There's that bee again.

John, I love the fake gecko. Portulacas are such interesting looking flowers. Don't you think?

Maria - Nobody can remember where the cute gecko came from. Maybe he turned to stone after doing those annoying Geico commercials :-)

Thanks Rob - Maybe I can find an orange gecko somewhere :-)

Donna - Apparently you can eat certain varieties and they have a lemony taste. Care to find out? ;-)

Well now, what they say about learning something new every day must be true!  I've heard of geckos, and I know what a bee is.  Although I had never heard of a "hairy footed" one.  But never have I heard of portulacas.  I thought for certain it was going to be some exotic Florida drink that pirates drank:-)  Especially, when they were hanging from baskets. . .Shows you what I knew!

John,

I love the Portulacas.  Their colors are so vibrant!

I swear that the gecko just asked me to switch my car insurance!  HAHHAHAHAH!

Hi Myrl - Maybe if we fermented the portulacas, we could make an exotic pirate drink and get Johnny Depp to promote it ;-) I've never heard of a hairy-footed bee either but I checked photos on Google and I think my bee looks the same. I learn something every day too!

John,

Your garden must be a wonderful place to play in for the birds and the bees and all other creatures like geckos (living or fake). The portulacas are blooming well and I love the colors!

That's a very busy bee, John. I love Portulacas; we always had them lining our walkway to the front door because they are so hardy and so pretty.

John,

Thanks for reminding me of portulacas, they are beautiful.  For a moment I thought the yellow gecko was for real as I first looked at the picture.  Thanks for sharing this with us. A

Hi Patricia - We had a Mallard Duck make a nest in the ferns one year and watched the ducklings waddle down to the water. That was pretty cool!

Hi Toni - Yes, portulacas are very hardy. Lining your walkway with these beautiful flowers is a great idea!

Hi Karen - I'll have to buy a macro lens to get close ups of that bee so you won't think it's a poppy :-)

That’s a pretty plant. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen one before, but my girlfriend remembers the flowers better than I do.
