John Mayer's Real Estate Blog: Speechless Sundays: The Pea Picker Farm

Speechless Sundays: The Pea Picker Farm

I drove a friend to the Brevard County Sheriff's Work Farm this morning where she will spend the day as a result of a DUI. The locals call this place "The Pea Picker Farm". It's free labor for the County and gives the participants time to think about why they're there. They all wear striped overalls just like Paul Newman in "Cool Hand Luke" and hopefully won't get eaten by the pond alligators :-) The gourmet lunch is peanut butter or balogna sandwiches on stale bread. They don't want you to come back!

Sheriff's Pea Picker Farm

This certainly beats time in jail!

Sheriff's Pea Picker Farm

This is where you check in and get your overalls. The program is far better than the alternative of depressing incarceration.

Thank you for the beautiful setting but I will pass on visiting this fine location.

Shame on her, I hope she learns a lesson from this experience.  Fortunately no one was injured while she was driving drunk.  Sorry for sounding harsh, but I have no sympathy for drunk drivers.

I like that the work farm and range and dog training are all in one place ... wonder if the workers are the firing range and dog training assistants ... now that would be serious deterrent

Hi Tim - We all make mistakes, some more serious than others. The facility sends a message not to return in a positive way.

Laura - You are right, of course but we all need a second chance to make things right.

Lehal - I suppose we could let a dog bite their arms off but then we would be living in Iran. Compassion and education are the ways to go.

John, I like this idea.  It beats crowding up our jails and still has the deterent effect.  Wish they had similar programs up here...

Something they need to do more of. Make them work and sweat and have time to think about what got them there. Instead of sitting in a jail whining to others in jail and give each other a pity party.

Very interesting John, didn't know they had places like that. Not that's it one we want to visit!  Good luck to your friend.

At my day job..(ugh..I hate saying that) we have people who have to do community work.  They spend their entire Saturdays and Sundays picking up trash and mowing endless miles of grass.

John,

I do hope your friend learns a valuable lesson. I'm fine with one Mulligan in these circumstances...but not two.

Chris - It's a win-win if there is such a thing in these circumstances.

Than - The message has to be sent but doesn't need to be draconic if no one was hurt.

Al and Peggy - This type of work farm is normal in the south and serves it's purpose very well. Maybe Canada could start a similar program.

Sussie - That's the price you pay for being out of control. Hopefully, the lesson will be learned.

Hi Rich - My friend has extenuating circumstances that are being addressed and hopefully will be resolved. Let's hope there will be no repeat. Take care buddy!

Hi John, I lived in Fla and had no idea that such places existed. I suppose you are right that it is better than incarceration but really the striped overalls are a bit, shall we say, 50's era, LOL.

Hi William - This is the bible belt south and striped jump suits are just another humiliation. Maybe one day we will cure alcolism and every other disease known to mankind but until then it is what it it is.

Hi John,

Ya, I could spend a day working there.  Not sure how I'd like the overalls but the facility.... well it doesn't look that bad!

Have a great week!

John, I remember when my girls were in elementary school, they used to have field trips to the Brevard County Sheriff's Work Farm.

So, now you know a DUI will get you time on the Pea Picker farm.

Hi DeeDee - At least the workers are outdoors and in a rural setting instead of a cell with nothing to occupy their time. It's not that bad.

Posted by John Mayer, Your Beach Area Expert (Oikos Realty, Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach Florida) over 7 years ago

Hi Sandy - Field trips to the farm are a good idea. It let's kids know that there are consequences if they mess up. I saw some half grown corn but didn't see any peas though :-)

I don't know how I missed this blog when you first posted it, but I did!  I won't even ask why you were in that neck of the woods. . .LOL

I also got a kick out of William's #17 comment. . .He was questioning the "fashion sense" of the stripes.  If there were a zoo nearby, they could blend in with the zebras:-)
