John Mayer's Real Estate Blog: Raising Kids Right in Cottage Country

Raising Kids Right in Cottage Country

I think I'm still in the giving thanks mode from Thanksgiving. My parents are both gone now and my family lives in Canada. Fortunately, my Canadian "snowbird" friends are ariving every day and they know how to party while the CD's are cranked up. Many of them are musicians as well. My horseshoe buddies keep me busy too! Having said that.......

My family always had cottages in the lake country just north of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This was where I learned how to fish and hunt, appreciate hiking through the back trails I knew every inch of and grew to be a man like my father. He built the sun room in this photo and all the boys helped out. Mom would always have a great meal on the table at 5:30 and we would all play board games, cards or have a campfire untill we got tired.

You'll have to excuse the photo quality because they were scanned from old prints. They were all taken in the 80's

That's me in my 30's with a Muskie. They're like freshwater barracudas and fight just as hard. I think I may have "bulked up" since then :-)

My brother Dan with his two sons Scott and Steven. The size limit for Muskies was only 32" at the time, Most people won't eat them because they don't know how to clean them properly. You have to brush off the slime they exude when caught and wash thoroughly before filleting. Then they taste just like bass.

Sounds like you had a Norman Rockwell childhood and the opportunity still exists if people invest in a cottage where their children can have similar experiences. I love the photos too!

John,

Nobody is worrying about the quality of the scans...the pictures tell a story of a happy family, and thats what matters.

Hi Van - If we could get every kid out of the city for a while, the world just might be a better place.

Thanks Rich - I miss my folks a lot, especially on these special Holidays. They did a good job raising us with proper values.

John - That little cottage looks like it resides on a little bit of Heaven.  Also, your mom, looks the spittin' image of one of my aunts.  I had to do a double take!

Myrl - We had a lot of good times there. People always tell me I look like somebody they know. I guess there are only so many profiles to go around :-)

Thanks Kathy - This time of year always makes me reflect on the past a little more.

Hi John, I was talking about this evening on the phone with a client. This is Deja Vu, but I certainly agree with you and it is not about age. In our discussion we were talking about technology and how it has usurped the personal out of relationships or even building them in depth to begin with. I think this is worthy of being featured and I am going to suggest this as a wonderful photostory

Thank you William - My sales manager Brian Boulter at Paris Marine used to tell his customers to "stop typing and start talking". Sales has changed in so many ways and not always for the better over the years. Technology enables consumers but sometimes "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing". A trained professional is always your best resource.

I agree with what you said about getting all the kids out of the city the world would be a better place. I have fond memories of playing outside everyday! Loved the pictures...looks like you had a fun family.

Love that cabin!  What a wonderful place to have spent time growing up . . .

Hi Sussie - Kids need to be in the outdorrs in a natural setting to appreciate our planet. Maybe one day we can all be raised that way without any distress, hunger or curable diseases.

Brenda - It was a magical place although it took me a while to appreciate it fully. It's like fine wine, it takes time to mature.

John, what wonderful photos!  And I love the description of the way you clean the funky fish!

Posted by Patricia Kennedy, Home in the Capital (RLAH Real Estate) about 7 years ago

Hi Patricia - The photos are old but I managed to clean them up a little. There are different secrets to clean certain fish so the meat isn't tainted. If you catch a bluefish in Florida, the first thing you do is cut it's throat and let the blood out. After you have filleted it you need to cut out the red line and then they taste great!
