Dragon Point, Merritt Island, Florida was finally sold for $800,000 and the new owners plan to rebuild. The mansion deteriorated over the years and Annie, the iconic 20 ton dragon statue sculpted in 1971 by Miami “warlock” artist Lewis VanDercar, fell apart during a 2002 storm. Then the land was tied up in court for years because of ownership disputes and code enforcement violations. The original mansion was 5700 sq. ft. with 600' of waterfront. "Annie" had a bar/lounge inside and every tourist (and even locals) took thousands of photos.
In 1982, VanDercar upgraded Annie by sculpting four dragon hatchlings alongside the concrete monster. Joy, Sunshine, Charity and Freedom. Expanding on that legend, Rojak was a fifth hatchling that Annie kept hidden underwater. We will have to see how the property transforms in the coming months ahead.
Dragon Point is located where the Indian River and Banana River lagoons meet.

Great post John Mayer ! I remember driving by Dragon Point on the Eau Gallie Causeway when I was a little kid. I was so fascinated by it. Thanks for the bring back those old memories.

Glad you enjoyed the post Paul. I remember seeing Annie for the first time in the early 90's from my bass player's boat and thought that she was way cool. Hopefully, the new owner will revive her spirit and bring the dragon back to life again.
I returned to Chicago from Cocoa Beach two days ago. Would have liked to visit the site if I had known.
Wow! I can hardly wait to see what they do with it. :)
You had a Miami warlock? Now I'm intrigued. I'm going to Google Lewis VanDercar.
David - It's pretty run down now so you didn't miss much. Plan to come back when the property comes to life again :-)
Hi Joni - It's unclear if "Annie" will be rebuilt but the new owner has stated that an iconic figure will grace the point once again. No one knows what that is yet.
Hi Myrl - Lewis VanDercar was indeed a warlock and died in 1988. We'll just have to find a Wicken or Pirate to take his place. Know any? :-)
